Horace Mann Renovation Update

Interior and exterior demolition and abatement continues and is on schedule. Learn more about the Horace Mann Renovation.

Meier Hall Addition

Mobilization will start later this week, tentatively Thursday, maybe Friday. Work will start on the Lafayette side of the site with fence erection and traffic control efforts. As early as Monday, a site contractor/excavator will be on site to begin the necessary protective measures and demolition of existing courtyard elements, including removal of existing plantings and stripping of topsoil. Following site mobilization, the contractor will begin preparations for the blasting of the building's foundation. Blasting is anticipated to begin tentatively on Thursday, August 14.

The contractor anticipates blasting to occur one to two times per day between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. A police detail will halt traffic near the site on Lafayette Street at the time of each blast, which will be like the duration of a traffic light. All blasting operations will be conducted during daylight hours, and no explosives will be stored at the construction site overnight. The site will be well marked with highly visible signs that detail the whistle warning sequence that will be sounded prior to the commencement of each blast. The whistle warning sequence is as follows:

  • Three long audible horn signals-five minutes to blast
  • Two short audible horn signals-one minute to blast
  • Blast occurs
  • One long audible horn signal-all clear

The contractor is still setting up a blasting notification list, where interested parties can receive a phone call, text message or email one hour prior to each blast. If you would like to be placed on the notification list, call their office at 508.603.5220. Learn more on the Meier Hall addition.
