Master of Science in Mathematics

The Master of Science in Mathematics degree can serve many needs. It provides the skills and knowledge needed to solve complex problems, a sound foundation for further graduate study at the doctoral level, and additional education for teachers at the secondary school level or beyond. It also serves those in or preparing for mathematics and statistics positions in applied settings: careers in industry, research, and commerce.

The program is designed to be especially convenient for students wanting to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics on a part-time basis. Courses are generally offered in the evening in the fall, spring and summer semesters.

About the Graduate Program

Program Features

  • Flexible pacing options: This program can be completed in 1.5 to 2 years full-time or 3 to 6 years part-time. The program is designed to be especially convenient for students wanting to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics on a part-time basis.

  • Course offerings: Courses are offered in the evening during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

  • Faculty: You will work with faculty with doctoral degrees from research universities and interests and expertise that range broadly over pure and applied mathematics.

  • Graduate assistantships: Opportunities to apply for graduate assistantships, grants and scholarships. 

Curriculum

Our robust 30-credit curriculum is divided into Level I and Level II, and candidates must complete at least nine credits from Level II. Each course is three credits.

Program Learning Objectives 

  • Demonstrate mastery of subject matter of advanced topics in mathematics. 

  • Construct sound mathematical arguments to prove theorems. 

  • Apply theoretical knowledge to solve problems, including problems involving modeling phenomena in other fields. 

  • Communicate mathematical results clearly.

Nationally, the median annual wage in 2024 was over $100,000 for mathematicians and statisticians, and projected growth (2023-2033) is much faster than average (11%).*
